Ok.. humor me for a minute. Do you remember being a kid? What is the most fond memory that you have? Go on, I will wait.. Think about it.. Really, look away from the page now, and think about your childhood memories. So what did you come up with? For me, it was going to the park and spending the day with my family at the pool. One of my favorite memories was making home videos with my brother and our friends in the basement, lip-syncing to Beastie Boys music. I also remember spending countless hours downstairs in the basement of our apartment home in Alexandria Virginia playing knee hockey with a paper ball that was wrapped up in tape. We had just moved back to the U.S and had no toys whatsoever.
What I want you to realize is that no matter what you do to make the day perfect, the simple things you are doing today may become one of your favorite memories when you get older. Don't worry about your house, your clothes, your car, or what others think about you. You are not in this to impress anyone. If you are single, maybe the best thing you can do right now is call a friend for a chat, or invite them over to watch a movie or even have a pizza night. If you are married, I am sure you can make the best dinner at home and watch a movie together in the comfort of your home. When we were newlyweds, my wife and I loved coming home in the evenings and playing Donkey Kong for hours (sometimes forgetting about dinner). For those that are married with kids, think about how you can have fun with your family. Maybe an outdoor barbecue, playing games in the backyard together as a family. Take them on a "free" road trip visiting a local historic place. These simple things are what life is made up of. Not the expensive car, or the best house in the neighborhood. You don't need to buy things to make yourself happy or feel good. That never works in your favor and robs you of the great memories you could be making in your own home.
If you have fallen into the trap of thinking that money may fix everything, take a step back. Take a look at what you would like your future memories to be. This should be the foundation of your journey. Put a plan in place, stop worrying, and know that you are going to be just fine. If you need help, talk to a financial coach. We work with you to put a plan together that will help you learn how to win and be content!!
As for the knee hockey, we still play that during some holidays. It is so fun! The simple things are the best memories and don't cost a thing! I leave you with this bible verse for inspiration: Mathew 6: 28-34
"Do Not Worry
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
